Landowners on Wilkes Lee Road want to close it to the public.
They want to take our public road, constructed and maintained with our tax dollars, and make it their private driveway. They can sneak it through under South Carolina law, if County Council and the Court don’t hear from us—the people who use the road!
- They may say that we can walk or ride bikes on “their” road,
- But why can’t we drive our cars on the road that we paid for with our tax money?
- They may say that they’re not going to put up a gate,
- But what’s to keep some future owner from putting up a gate?
- They may say that fire trucks and ambulances can drive on “their” road,
- But what if some future owner puts up a gate? Minutes matter in an emergency.
- They may say that we can just “go around,”
- But who are they to tell us to “go around”? It’s our road, not theirs.
- They may say that there’s too much traffic on “their” one lane road,
- But doesn’t that prove the value of the road to the public?
- They may say that people go too fast on “their” road,
- But did they consider asking the County for speed bumps?
